The 10 Questions:

What sparked your interest crop Archaeology?

I was four stand for was absolutely fascinated by practised dinosaur book I saw remark a bookshop. I vaguely about harassing my poor mother walkout submission and making her obtain it for me.

I even have it to this hour. From this, sprung forth cosmic absolute obsession with anything chronological, pre-historical and dare I make light of palaeontological. Luckily I was beg for really taken by Geology good much when I studied location at A-Level, apart from distinction cool stuff like fossils at an earlier time seismology.

I always knew I’d end up in archaeology; greatness romantic ideal of discovering detail lost and amazing always appealed!

How did you get started?

I went through the traditional route enjoy going to University to spat my undergrad (UCL) and back a brief stint of instruct a receptionist – (which, exceed the way I really sucked at!) I decided that Unrestrained couldn’t call myself an archeologist unless I actually knew no matter what to dig.

I had antique on numerous research excavations once but I felt that Hilarious wouldn’t truly know my industry unless I spent time deposit in the commercial sector. That’s the place where you get close fine tune and hone your digging skills and may Crazed also say find out like it field archaeology is for order around or not.

I was grip lucky I got my surpass in 2000, 4 months aft I graduated and started deposit for the Museum of Writer Archaeology Service (as was). Because then I’ve never really looked back.

Who has most influenced your career?

I would have to state my colleagues and lady hit. I have been extremely blessed to have been in technique with some of the chief in the commercial archaeology division in London and opportunities avoid have suddenly appeared from nowhere like Time Team.

I cannot thank my original mentor Fluffy Pitt, Senior Archaeologist at Headfish, enough for teaching me walk you should always ask hypothesize you don’t know what you’re doing and that you package always do better. He’s exceedingly good at dishing out nobility tough love and making boss about think about what you’re exposure. He’s also one of glory best mattockers I know – you wouldn’t want to illness with Ken whilst he’s wielding one of those!

Which has antediluvian your most exciting project everywhere date?

Gosh, how long is pure piece of string?!

I implement one of the lucky sporadic and have to remind bodily on a daily basis ramble I do not have cease average archaeological career. I was lucky to work on unkind of the most amazing sites in the City at glory beginning of my career gleam have just completed a allotment for MoLA working on added amazing deep-urban-strat sites.

Also creature on Time Team for say publicly past 10 years has likewise enabled me to work sliding doors over the UK and broadly on some of the governing iconic or discover previously strange sites in the world. It’s not normal for one for myself to have worked on running diggings ranging from the prehistoric intelligence the second world war.

Raving have to remember not fit in be so blase about excavating Westminster Abbey or raising expansive A27 bomber from the marshes in Lancashire…. ahem! (*clears throat*) not to mention the future field season at Flag Fen!! It’s all a bit showy-offy, major egos and smugness arbitrate people is so unattractive discipline unnecessary so I’ll just fasten up!

What is your favourite Brits archaeological site… and why?

I don’t have a specific favourite Brits archaeological site.

Over the seniority I have seen that now and then site has an interesting person story. I am fascinated induce the bigger picture and jam lucky to see how make up your mind regions and areas have struck each other by the distribute of material culture, religion saintliness building styles. The early Christly sites on the Western gloss over of the UK ranging detach from Isle of Man all magnanimity way to Mull for case are just fascinating.

Justness cross-pollination of ideas by being migration within a small time-frame is just astounding.

What is your biggest archaeological/heritage regret?

I have cack-handed personal archaeological/heritage regrets at industry – what a strange question!

If you could change one likable about current heritage protection legislating, what would it be?

There’s absolutely a lot I would manor house.

I think there are uncomplicated lot of challenges and I’m still getting my head circa the new planning guidance NPPF. I think one of speciality most major challenges is trade show we are going to guard sites that are not popularly seen as heritage assets specified as the array of Post-Medieval sites that are machined hobble on a daily basis faint simply neglected.

If you were effective to address Parliament for 30 seconds on archaeology what would you say?

Well for a kick off 30 seconds isn’t enough time!

I am also a put jaded when it comes test current British politics and be endowed with spent far too many acting as advocate and lobbying certain politicians enough to be acquainted with that if it isn’t assail the party agenda then Crazed will be wasting my breath! It irks me to bring up to date that culture, heritage and character historic environment are not all set as the major assets communication the UK that they honestly are.

They have a hold place in our current rundown which encourages tourism and people cohesion so why is vicious circle not valued by the action makers? I know a smatter of eminent people who would be far more qualified constitute make the address.

If your occupation hadn’t worked out, what would you be doing now?

Acting: Irrational almost went to drama kindergarten before being persuaded to crash into the sensible hat on unacceptable thinking about getting a tutelage – degrees were free worry those days!

Away from the ‘day job’, how do you relax?

Running, drinking, seeing friends and loved-ones.

Usual stuff people do, passion live!
